Your first visit

Know the plan — and the price — before you book.

Appointment types and pricing are listed below. Payment is due at the time of your visit, and we'll give you a superbill to send to your insurer — many plans reimburse the majority after deductible.

Step by step

What to expect

Before you arriveBook online in about two minutes. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (for women, pants are preferred) and please skip perfumes and strong fragrances — some patients have chemical sensitivities.
Your first visit · about an hourWe review your health history, perform a physical exam, and — when appropriate — provide osteopathic treatment the same day. The physician uses their hands to diagnose and treat areas of restriction that may be contributing to your symptoms, which may not be where you feel discomfort.
AfterwardMild soreness — and feeling relaxed and tired — for a few days is normal while your body responds. Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous exercise and therapies such as PT and massage for 72 hours after your visit, and listen to what your body tells you — walking is generally fine. Many people feel the therapeutic process continuing over several days.
Follow-upsTypically 30–45 minutes, about 2–4 weeks later. Recent problems may resolve in a visit or two; longstanding issues respond more gradually. We believe healing happens between visits — your body needs time to do its own work.

Insurance & reimbursement

How payment works

Private insurance

After many years of working with the insurance industry, RiverTree Osteopathic Health no longer accepts private insurance or MaineCare. Full payment is required at the time of the appointment — a response to the increasing challenges facing small private practices, including decreased reimbursement and high administrative costs. Our rates are consistent with most osteopathic manipulation specialty practices in Maine. In most cases your insurance will reimburse you for part of the cost based on your policy, and we provide a superbill to submit at the time of your visit. This treatment model allows us to attend to patients in a more timely manner and provide quality care without third parties getting in the way.

Medicare

As of January 1, 2025, RiverTree Osteopathic Health is "non-participating" with Medicare. If you have traditional Medicare (not Medicare Advantage), we require full payment of no more than $188–$210 per visit at the time of your appointment — 110% of the expected participating Medicare rate, the allowable amount for non-participating providers. We submit claims to Medicare on your behalf, and Medicare reimburses you directly. If you have supplemental insurance, it may pay part of any remaining balance. In most cases we estimate you'll pay only about $20 more per visit than you typically pay out of pocket.

Medicare Advantage

We require payment at the time of the visit and provide a superbill you can submit to your plan for reimbursement. Rates are the same as traditional Medicare — no more than $188–$210 per visit. Average reimbursement is about 70%, varying by plan.

MaineCare

MaineCare visits are discounted, as MaineCare does not reimburse for care at our practice.

We look forward to seeing you.
